HK-50

Knights of the Old Republic 2

After witnessing HK-47's abilities first-hand, Revan decided that more droids of this design would make efficient agents for his purposes. HK-47 became the basis for a new model of HK-series assassin droids: the hk50s_telos_military base sublevelHK-50, which were manufactured in a secret facility on Telos IV. However, Revan was captured and his memory was erased before this plan could be realized, and the production on the HK-50 model ceased for several years. Sometime after Revan's disappearance, production continued again under the planning droid turned crime lord G0-T0, who discovered the HK-50 manufacturing facility hidden on Telos IV and reactivated it, disseminating a newly created HK-50 droid army throughout the galaxy searching for the Jedi. They often grouped together, and opposite to HK-47 who worked alone, HK-50 often worked in teams. We saw them later returning in the footsteps of the Exile to the Telos Military Base Sublevel in the game.

The HK-50 droids series was based on the earlier HK-47 assassin droid. Like their progenitor, these droids possessed incredible linguistic skills and highly sadistic tendencies. The primary function of the HK-50 droids, as they stated it, was to "facilitate communications and terminate hostilities." HK-50 units were identical in appearance to HK-47, with the primary exception being that they are silver-blue in color instead of HK-47's rusty orange, and while HK-47 had red photoreceptors, HK-50 had yellow eyes.

The HK-50 assassin droid were designed to look like a simple protocol droid. Due to his appearance, he were often mistaken for protocol droids by many, and he used this to his advantage hiding his true nature in order to covertly achieve his goals, liquidating his prey. Although this protocol droid theory soon broke down when a group of HK-50 approached the master fully armed, and attacked him. The HK-50 droid does not show mercy, and even seems to enjoy violence.

HK-50's personality programming caused him to appear cruel, extreme bloodlust, arrogance, misanthropic, bordering on sociopathic, to those who encountered him. The droid seemed to enjoy observing, and often causing, death and destruction.

HK-50 also had a unique speech trait, where he would vocally prefix every statement he made with a speech conditional that described the type of statement it was. For example, if saying a sentence, he would first say "chiding statement:", before beginning his sentence. It is quite the same that we got used to listening to HK-47, but a bit different, because the HK-50 units are often adding adjectives to his speech conditionals (such as "eager threat" or egoistical boast, irritated declaration, or unnecessary addendum which are even more funny that HK-47's single phrases.

Due to his appearance, he, as well as his subsequent models, were often mistaken for protocol droids by many, and he used this to his advantage on more than one occasion, hiding his true nature in order to covertly achieve his goals.

The hk50 peragusfirst HK-50 unit we encounter in the game is in the Peragus mining facility. The HK-50 posed as a protocol droid and arranged for a series of accidents to befall the facility. The Exile Jedi was injected with a dose of sedatives that would be lethal to a non-Jedi, but which only made him/her sick and unconscious for a time, but fortunately regenerated, and got out from his/her kolto tank. HK-50 also corrupted the programming of the facility's mining droids, causing them to attack the local miners, so HK-50 only had to finish off just a few remaining. These subtle manipulations of the HK-50 unit and the highly fatal results demonstrate the dangerous nature of the HK-50 model of assassin droids. After the Exile regenerated, and went to explore the facility, they met face to face with the HK-50 assassin droid. However first he behaves kind of friendly with the Exile, be careful with him, he will attack the Exile Jedi, Kreia, and Atton Rand in the right time, when they are trying to escape Darth Sion's sith assassins. He must be destroyed, otherwise we cannot leave the place, do so, and you will have the first part to your later quest, "repair HK-47".

Later we will meet some other HK-50 droid. They follow Exile everywhere, and they are relentless in their pursuit. They tracked down his party in the hk50_underground_base_telosunderground base on Telos, but arrived too late, the Exile and his team swept out the enemy resistance above the base, and down there, captured an orbital shuttle, and escaped just before a squad of HK-50s, (who were often working in groups, opposite to HK-47, who was a lone wolf). However the HK-50 droids missed to battle our team, they have calculated their flight direction using the data of the underground bay control computer, and will pursue them along, soon stoping them again.

hk50_polarregionHK-50 droids were proficient hk50_telos_polar_regionkillers, as well as highly innovative, using many varied techniques, and weapons. We could see examples for several kinds of weapons in their hands, when a HK50 droid shot down Exile's ship with an AA rocket launcher above hk50_blasterTelos polar region, and after they have crash-landed, 3 hk50_rifle_gunHK-50 droids attacked them on the snowy planet surface. One of them had a smaller pistol-like blaster, he attacked Kreia. The Exile Jedi was attacked by two HK-50 units, one of the had a rifle gun, the other had a heavy repeater, (that we saw in the hands of hk50_heavy repeaterCanderous Ordo, too) so that was the fourth weapon which could be noticed just within this short fight. For the player, hk50_droid_killit is strongly recommended to use force powers, the destroy droid ability is very good against the robotic opponents, also the ion grenades make large damage. hk50_remainsAfter the HK50 droids were destroyed, we can gain some good experience points, and as an extra reward, we hk47_damagedcan search the bodies for remaining, and we will find some HK droid parts, a valuable HK control cluster in one of the aggressors, which could be perfectly used into the damaged HK-47 which is standing malfunctioning in one of the room of the Ebon Hawk.

t3_vs_hk50HK-50 droids will try to stop and/or destroy the small T3-M4 droid, Revan's and Exile's old and faithful droid from stealing the escape flight codes from the Nar Shaddaa warehouse which is really important for the Ebon Hawk to escape the planet. The code helps them to trick GOTO, who will think they are some kind of a valuable cargo vessel, and attacks them. A 3 member team will infiltrate into G0T0's ship, rescue Exile, and destroy Goto's ship.

HK-50, just like HK-47 was also voiced by Kristoffer Tabori, in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords. For the respect of the actor, who kindly sent us two great section opening sentences, I dedicated this month for him, first publishing an article about HK-47, introducing a hand made HK-47 custom figure, and studying the works and main roles of Mr Tabori. In this article I introduced his other droid role, hk50_makingofHK-50, and will show you a custom HK-50 figure. This time I decided to choose an other solution, namely I have collected all HK parts from the Legacy build a droid series, some of them were HK-47, some of them were HK-50, assembled them together, and painted homogeny all part, even correcting the color of the original parts, since I saw them in an other color than it was seen in the game.

Please take a look at my custom HK-50 figure!
